Flynn Turns One!

As I write this I still can’t believe I have a one year old, how did that happen?! It seems like the year has flown by, but at the same time I can’t remember what life was like without him (apart from the sleep, I vaguely remember having a long lie, and miss it a lot!!)

I have come a long way from googling EVERYTHING!!! I remember I was obsessed with his poo’s at the beginning, keeping a note of how many a day and making sure the colour tied to the pictures of my book!! I think this is pretty normal with your first baby and makes me laugh when I think back. I am definitely more relaxed now, although if he is ill I will be back to worrying like crazy.

I have learnt so much over the year, most importantly I have learnt not to put too much pressure on myself. Being a mum has definitely been harder than I imagined. I appreciate all the small things so much more. I am very lucky to have supportive parents near by, it is important to me that Flynn is close to his grandparents as I didn’t live near mine growing up.

I do love to party plan and was very excited to organise Flynn’s first party! I thought I would note some of the great companies I used and where I got everything as party planning is a time consuming process. I know he is only one and unaware of what was going on, but all the babies had so much fun, and the mums enjoyed a well deserved glass of prosecco to celebrate surviving the first year!

I booked Joy Tots on Ferry Road in Edinburgh. This is a great baby cafe I have been visiting since Flynn was born. I would highly recommend this for a babies party, they have a play area which is cornered off and you can see the babies easily.

Joy Tots arranged a sensory disco and the babies loved it. It was nice to have an activity to keep them occupied and tire them out! Louise at Joy Tots was great and contacted me in advance to arrange everything. A power point can be set up if you wish, running a slide show of baby pictures. This was a lovely touch and I loved seeing Flynn’s newborn pictures again.

I decided on a teepee theme, Peter Rabbit was a close second! I sourced a few decor items from companies on Etsy. I love Etsy, there are lots of unusual items to discover and the fact that you can help support small businesses is a bonus.

I bought the bunting from Katz Corner Boutique. I am a huge fan of boho decor and the bunting looked great above the baby pictures.

My favourite item was a chalk board by Porter and Bramble. It looked amazing, included all of Flynn’s favourite things and is a lovely keepsake. Megan the shop owner was really helpful and incorporated the theme beautifully! Check out the shop on Etsy, they also do gorgeous wedding boards.

As I decided to go for a naked cake the cake toppers were a big focal point. I got such a cute mini teepee from Isla and Ollie which I sat on top of the cake with a wooden number one cake topper (Norwegian Birch 12cm) from Sophia Victoria Joy. I adore this website, they have so many different cake toppers for weddings and any celebration!

I bought disposable tableware from Party Pieces “Let’s Explore” range, which fitted the theme perfectly. I also got cute wooden cutlery in a brightly coloured zig zag design from Hobby Craft.

I managed to source some great bargains in the B&M Store, £2.99 for food platters and £1 for plastic glasses!

The most important thing first, cake! I went for a plain buttercream and jam vanilla sponge naked cake. Lesley from Eat Me by Lesley made a delicious two tier cake, together with the cake toppers it looked fantastic. Lesley specialises in cocktail inspired cupcakes. The cupcakes are so tasty and very pretty, great for a girly get together!

The venue can provide a buffet or you can provide your own. I ordered a selection of buffet food from M&S. I had read mixed reviews on the website, but the canapés and sandwiches were fresh and good quality. This worked out cheaper per person, together with fruit and rice cakes for the babies.

I decided not to do goody bags as they are not so important for a first birthday party, so I did party favour biscuits instead. The biscuits are so cute and can be personalised. I had each babies name written on the biscuits and the mums loved them! Check them out on Instagram at Button’s Biscuits.

We had such a great day celebrating with family and friends! I am lucky to have met such great mama friends, who have been so supportive throughout pregnancy and over the past year.

I hope some of the above is helpful for anyone planning a party!
